The Seafarers Welfare Association of Kochi (SWAK) was established on 15 August 2010 by seafarers, both active and retired, to assist seafarers in keeping pace with the maritime development of Kochi while meeting the growing needs of local and foreign seafarers in Kochi. The inauguration of the Vallarpadam Container Terminal in February 2011 is only an indication of the urgent needs of seafarers in a growing Kochi, which as a port and harbour is lacking by all accounts in terms of the welfare of seafarers compared to other major ports of South Asia.
The SWAK comprises registered members of the National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI), Forward Seamen's Union of India (FSUI) and the Seafarers Welfare Fund Society (SWFS) and focuses its activities, among other things, on the following objectives:
* To uphold the welfare of seafarers in Kochi; active and retired, local and foreign
* Support ex-seafarers and their families with specific welfare programmes that include self-sustaining, resource-generating projects besides fighting for their due rights
The SWAK committee after several discussions and consultations has come up with a project to start with, which ideally combines both the above-mentioned goals. The Seafarers Club in Vallarpadam!
The Seafarers Club
The Seafarers Club in Vallarpadam will be a modern recreational facility for the seafarers biding their time in Kochi as well as provide welfare for ex-seafarers and their families through employment. A world class service for visiting seafarers will be the slogan of the club.
The SC combines sophistication with functionality while catering to seafarers who are used to international standards in hospitality and recreation. The club proposes a recreational sporting facility including two swimming pools, a bar, conference halls and well-appointed rooms.
The club will be entirely run by ex-seafarers and their families who are in need of welfare. SWAK proposes many training programmes for the personnel to run this facility with utmost professionalism.
SWAK has identified an ideal plot in Vallarpadam and is negotiating at this time with the Port Trust for acquiring the plot. The Union Ministry of Shipping has already accorded sanction to the Kochi port to lease out some of its prime properties of land for a period of 60 years.
